The ShakeOut Drill

At 10:10 a.m. on 18 September 2009, thousands of West Coasters will practice Drop, Cover, and Hold On. Many people and organizations will also practice other aspects of their emergency plans.

The West Coast ShakeOut is locally organized with the online support of California's Earthquake Country Alliance, which in 2008 organized the Great Southern California ShakeOut with nearly 5.5 million participants. The Great California ShakeOut will now be held on the third Thursday of October each year, and span all of California.

PROTECT YOURSELF!

Why is it important to do a Drop, Cover, Hold On drill? As with anything, to react quickly you must practice often. You may only have seconds to protect yourself in an earthquake, before strong shaking knocks you down--or drops something on you.

You may have heard of a theory called "Triangle of Life," perhaps by email. Reputable emergency organizations, emergency responders, and legitimate search and rescue organizations support "Drop, Cover, and Hold On." Our special report describes this issue in detail. Learn more here.
