How Scouting Groups Can Participate

Californians must get better prepared before the next big earthquake, and practice how to protect ourselves when it happens. The purpose of the ShakeOut is to help people and organizations do both.

The boxes below provide instructions for how Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and similar organizations can plan their drill, tips for getting prepared, and suggestions for sharing the ShakeOut with others. With your participation, this may be the largest earthquake drill ever!

ShakeOut Scouting Patches:

We are glad to announce that “The Great California ShakeOut 2011 Participant” patch will be available to scouts for this year’s Great California ShakeOut earthquake drill. The recommendations for how your scouts can earn their patches have been simplified based on the experience of past drills.

  1. Participate in a troop meeting on earthquake preparedness before the ShakeOut date, in which you cover the content in the ShakeOut Meeting Outline document and complete the Scouting Earthquake Preparedness Worksheet. Troop Instructors (either adults or scouts) will need to plan this meeting for the troop.

  2. Register your troop and participate in the Great California ShakeOut earthquake drill on October 20, 2011. As most scouts will be in school at the time of the drill, they may participate separately and then again as a troop later in the day or another day that week.
