ShakeOut: Updates

Two Months to the ShakeOut!

September 17, 2008

At 10 a.m. on November 13, millions of Southern Californians will participate in the ShakeOut Drill, the largest earthquake preparedness activity in U.S. history! The ShakeOut is a chance to practice how to protect ourselves in big earthquakes, and for everyone to get more prepared. If you have not yet planned to participate, please register.

The Great Southern California ShakeOut is based on a magnitude 7.8 earthquake on the San Andreas Fault-- 5,000 times larger than the July 29 Chino Hills earthquake! To see a stunning animation of how this earthquake will shake the region, and learn more, visit the ShakeOut scenario website.

We're All in This Together

As of September 17, over 3.1 million people have been registered– as individuals and families, and through schools, businesses, governments, and many other organizations. But we can only count you as a part of the ShakeOut if you register. (If you have already registered, thank you!) To see which organizations are participating in your area, go to www.ShakeOut.org and click on your county's name in the right column.

Get Ready to ShakeOut!

In a major earthquake, your survival and recovery may depend on more than what you have done individually to prepare. Are your neighbors ready? Your children’s school? The local businesses you frequent? Your employer? Talk about the ShakeOut with everyone you may depend on (or that may depend on you). Encourage them to join the ShakeOut and register at www.ShakeOut.org/register

We Can Make History

People get prepared for earthquakes when they discuss what to do with people they know. Start that conversation by forwarding this email to your friends, family, colleagues, and others, and encourage them to join you in the ShakeOut. If you are registered as an individual, you can also use the "invite others" feature when you login, where you can see if people you have invited have registered.

With your help, this will be the largest earthquake drill in U.S. history, and we all will be much more prepared for the Big One when it happens!
