Media briefing marking the 20th anniversary of the Northridge earthquake, highlighting scientific advances in our understanding of the faults beneath our feet, and the earthquakes they can create. How far have we come since then? Are we better at earthquake forecasting than we were two decades ago? In the digital age, how are cutting-edge supercomputers being used to simulate and understand earthquakes?
Ideal for journalists covering earthquakes and disaster preparedness, or for those developing stories about the anniversary of the historic Northridge earthquake that killed 57 people and injured 8,700 others — and what we have learned since.
Briefing to include visual presentation and interview opportunities with leading scientists from the USC-based Southern California Earthquake Center, the U.S. Geological Survey and the Calif. Governor’s Office of Emergency Services.
Briefing will include:
Maps showing the expansion of instrumentation networks in Southern California;
Maps and animations of known faults in 1994 compared to known faults today;
Graphics showing improvements in earthquake forecasts over the past 20 years.

10 a.m.: Briefing with presentations by experts listed above
