Full Description:
The Newport Beach Fire Department is supporting National Tsunami Preparedness Week and hosting a workshop to prepare residents. It has been eleven years since the Sumatra Tsunami that killed over 300,000 people and four years since the Japan catastrophic earthquake and tsunami that killed nearly 20,000 people and triggered the country's worst nuclear disaster. The City of Newport Beach is a coastal community which has more than 40,000 residents that live in the pre-identified tsunami inundation area. Since 2004, the Fire Department has been actively planning and preparing for this low probability high consequence event. The city has been recognized by the National Weather Service as a Tsunami Ready community due to numerous planning efforts. Virtually all homes in Southern California are vulnerable for unexpected earthquakes. The workshop will discuss the earthquake and tsunami threat to Newport Beach, what the city is doing to prepare for these unexpected disasters and what residents can to to better prepare themselves.

Residents are invited to attend this free workshop to learn new information about the impacts of earthquakes and tsunamis and how they can prepare themselves and their neighborhoods.

No registration is necessary. For more information, call 949-644-3112 or email nbcert@nbfd.net.
