Stories From The Great ShakeOut

June Brown
(Facilities Manager - OHL)

OHL is a 3rd party global logistics company. All 400 employees in the six distribution centers in the Southern California Region, our managers, regional staff and our Regional Vice President participated in the drill. Vendors, truckers, and Ability Counts personnel on site also joined in. At 10:20 am we sounded our air horns. The employees who were on forklifts stayed on them, everyone else in the warehouse and offices found a place to "Drop, Cover and Hold On". Some found desks, tables, support columns, others went to the end of the rack aisles. After one minute, the air horns sounded again and everyone gathered in their location and took roll call. They encouraged discussion on how the event went and what would they do in the event of an actual emergency.

To prepare for the drill, we distributed fliers on "Drop, Cover and Hold On", as well as "Seven Steps to Earthquake Safety". Daily emails were sent to the management team with different ideas on how to be prepared.

Comments from the participating warehouses discussed the seriousness of the drill, taking the knowledge home to their families, questions arising from the employees location when the drill air horn sounded. This created dialog within the groups on "where do I go?" and what do I do.

This is our fourth year participating in the Great California Shake Out, and this year had the largest number of employees participating.
