Melody Coffey-Love My nursing class participated in the ShakeOut. Although I had posted several Utube videos online and the shakeout web page - the students were somewhat surprised when I started the recording (video). I did not tell them we would be doing the actually drill ahead of time. All but one dropped - covered - and held for the full 2 minutes. Afterwards we talked about preparedness information and viewed some of the Utube videos. We also played Beat the Quake - they loved it! Some played along on their own laptops at the same time. Students were encouraged to view the rest of the videos and information on the ShakeOut web pages. We will be doing more disaster preparedness in our public health nursing course later this semester. The only problem was that I had the sound turned up on the video and the instructor in the next room came into my room to ask me to turn it down as it was disturbing them - I guess they were not taking part in the shakeout drill. I hope to participate again next year! It was a great opportunity and a fabulous learning experience - that directly relates to course content in our PH Nursing courses. |
