Stories From The Guam ShakeOut

Shannon Alfred
(Emergency Coordinator - Namgis First Nation / Village of Alert Bay)

In my community, the Great Shakeout flyers were handed out door to door and two emergency preparedness workshops were held leading up to the Great Shakeout drill.
We had five departments within the Namgis First Nation participate in the great shakeout drill, as well as both elementary schools; the Alert Bay Elementary School and the T'lisalagi'lakw School. There was a great response to the drill and it sparked people and students awareness to wanting to be more prepared.

Teachers and students did a good job at the duck, cover and hold procedure under their desks and held onto the desk leg while they counted to 60 twice, than proceeded to evacuate to their designated areas outside.

Workers did a good job as well, from the drill they discussed as a group and identified many hazards within their office space, as well as other areas that might have been more safer.

Overall, participants awareness levels were raised and realized that they need to be better prepared. Workers were happy to take part in the drill this year and it provided a common discussion with their children at dinner.

Looking forward to next the next drill.
